Things That Helped Improve My English (After SPM Version)

Fret not! I'm not going to write this post in full English. I know it's kinda weird to write about English subject in other languages, but I am kinda miss to write in rojak language. Hope all of you can bear with me. By the way, all things listed below are based on my own experience after my SPM.

Things That Helped Improve My English (After SPM Version)

#1: Running Man
Kang Ha Neul in Running Man
I just have to put this screen cap of Kang Ha Neul.
Kang Ha Neul is one of the guests for Running Man episode 240.

Ha, siapalah yang sangka Running Man ni boleh improve English seseorang. But Running Man really did wonders for me. I used to spend 3 hours just to watch one episode of Running Man. That's twice longer than the actual episode. Semuanya sebab tak biasa baca English subtitles. I had to pause a lot along the way bila nampak perkataan yang saya tak faham ataupun nak menghadamkan makna ayat tu. Setiap kali tengok Running Man, mesti ada kamus dekat sebelah. Bila fikir balik, macam kelakar pula. But really, I picked up a lot of new vocab from Running Man. This is when the subbing team is iSubs. The English is almost perfect.

#2: Reader's Digest

I personally think if you want to be super smart in English, you have to read Reader's Digest. I read Reader's Digest at the public library because I can't afford to subscribe it. Too expensive for my family. First time baca Reader's Digest ni, rasa macam "Masya Allah, banyaknya perkataan yang aku tak tahu. Banyaknya benda yang aku tak faham. Rasa bodoh sangat ni". That comes from a person who claimed she loves English! I took a week just to finish one edition. Lama sebab nak memahamkan benda-benda yang disampaikan dalam Reader's Digest tu sangat mencabar. Daripada Reader's Digest ni, saya belajar banyak vocab baru dan different kind of sentences in English.

#3: K-pop and K-Variety Shows

Fell in love with Siwon's smile in this music video *swoon*
Super Junior - No Other

Yes, yes, you can laugh at my face now but I guess in a way, I owed a thank you to K-pop and K-Variety Shows. Saya ni terjebak dengan K-pop dan K-Variety Shows lepas SPM. I was obsessed with Super Junior back then. Super Junior pula banyak variety shows. Semua variety shows subtitles dia English. So, I had to put a lot of effort to read and understand the subtitles of the veriety shows sebab konon-konon nak tengok segalanya Super Junior. Songs translations pun semua dalam English. Memang gigihlah.

#4: Harry Potter books

Raise your hands up if you're one of the Potterheads! So, I tried to read all the Harry Potter books after SPM. Sebab orang kata kalau nak improve English, kenalah baca English material. Betul tak? And man, it was so hard for me to finish them. I spent two weeks or more to finish one book. I guess that was because my kiasu kicked in kot. I also tried to read aloud to test my pronunciation and to make sense of everything that I read. I think that was one of the best decisions that I ever made. I realized that I cannot pronounce many words correctly (although it sounded right in my head). Oh, and I made a note that I don't like the sound of my voice. hehehehe

#5: Taylor Swift songs

I'm not a Swiftie but man, I love Taylor Swift songs. Lepas SPM sebelum terjebak dengan K-pop, saya memang layan Taylor Swift. Teardrops On My Guitar used to be my jam. I used to remember the lyrics. Mine reminds me of someone. Oh gosh! I kinda have love-hate relationship with this song. hahahahaha! Back to the topic. Taylor Swift songs trained my listening. Saya ni sebenarnya pemalas sikit nak dengar betul-betul lyrics lagu-lagu ni. Memang selalu tak ambil perhatian dekat lyrics. Saya selalu dengar music je. Tapi, daripada lagu Taylor Swift ni saya cuba latih diri untuk mendengar pronunciation of words and the meaning of songs. I was actually surprised with myself that I can understand what she's singing. *refer to malas point tu balik*

Taylor Swift - Blank Space
"Got along with Starbucks lovers" or "All the lonely Starbucks lovers"

This happened this year.

*Refer balik to the malas point* I have listened to Blank Space banyak kali tapi satu hari tu, baru perasan. "Eh, apakah Taylor Swift? Why is she talking about Starbucks lover?". As soon as I reached home, I google-ed the lyrics of Blank Space. It's actually "Got a long list of ex-lovers" not "Got along with Starbucks lovers" or "All the lonely Starbucks lovers". Had a good laugh at myself sebab bukan je pemalas nak dengar (50 kali or more, dengar baru perasan), salah dengar lagi. Ish ish ish.

So, those are the 5 things that helped improve my English after my SPM. Haruslah diingatkan yang ni very specific for after my SPM. Saya ada buat cara lain lagi. Insya Allah, bila-bila nanti saya share cara lain.

Betul tu kak! Reader's Digest tu memang sangat membantu. Rasa macam nak suruh semua orang beli buku tu. Kalau tak biasa, memang rasa susah mula-mula. Tapi, kalau dah baca, okay je nanti.

Ya, saya dalam community yang speak English 24/7. Masalahnya, saya ni tak banyak bergaul sangat. hahahaha. My bad. Tapi, insya Allah, final year nanti nak aktifkan diri dekat sekolah supaya boleh kenal ramai orang dan communicate dengan orang baru.

    3. Takpelah kalau kena bermadu. Bermadu virtually is accepatable tapi kalau bermadu in real life tu, errrrrrrrr.

Itulah. Saya pun selalu dengar budak-budak SBP dengan MRSM baca Reader's Digest. Sebab tulah kot, diaorang semua pandai-pandai. Speaking pun berhabuk je :D

Insya Allah, will try to. Thanks kak Siti :)

  7. Macam akak suka tengok english series especially british mcm Dr. Who or America mcm How I Met Your Mother or even Friends. Tapi kena ada english subs. Baru lah paham. haha.

And SONGS! Akak memang dari zaman sekolah radio ada kat sebelah. my favs of course flyfm. Dari zaman sekolah sampai skrang still kat flyfm. Then akak belajar pun kena ada music gak. And my plasylist mostly english songs. Kkdng akak donlod satu album.

Even english akak berterabur gak tapi at least akak paham org cakap apa, and org tu paham akak cakap apa. haha.

  9. Ok, ini komen dlm tajuk.
One of my way to improve my english ialah masa tgk tv series onkan dia punya subtitles.
Subtitles dlm cerita sangat membantu.

  10. yg running man dgn korean drama tu betul sangat kak farah! hahaha. excited pulak baca entry akak ni. sye ni jenis bila org cakap english or saya baca buku english, saya paham. tpi bila saya nak ckp english dgn org i can't. 1st,banyak perkataan yg saya lupa. 2nd, lidah selalu terbelit. haha payah ni nak masuk U nanti T__T

n part lagu tu memang betul sangatlah. teacher saya pun kata dgr lagu english ni sgt membantu kita dlm bahasa english. ada sekali tu saya jawab exam n ade perkataan BI yg saya taktau pun apa maknanya tpi sbb biasa dengar ayat tu kat lagu english favourite saya so fahamlah makna dia, haha.

part TS tu betul, banyak lagu dia yg saya keliru mcm "starbucks lovers" tu :p sbb slang english dia sebut laju. saya slalu nyanyi lagu taylor swift tpi lirik dia main tibai je ikut apa yg saya dengar xD

    1. Kan, Mazni! Sebenarnya, membantu je Running Man dengan Korean dramas ke Korean songs tu semua. Tapi, kitalah yang kena ambil inisiatif :)

Memang. Lagu English ni pun sangat membantu kalau kita nak belajar English.

Insya Allah, nanti bolehlah tu. Ramai je orang yang start gaining confidence to speak in English masa diaorang dekat university. Akak sampai sekarang pun lidah terbelit juga. Ada masalah pronunciation lagi. Tapi, kita usaha. Usaha tu yang penting.

Tapi, lepas tu, saya malas sikitlah nak mendengar sebab dah terbiasa baca subtitles je.

  12. Tak feeling lah tengok running man sbb xfaham. Sape yg tgok running man dgn aku mesti penat sbb kne terangkan apa yg dorg cuba lakukan.

Aku belajar english drpd subtitle cerita melayu. Nampak mcm ayat tu best, terus ingat then bubuh time buat essay. Dulu yelah rajin noh menghafal, skrg nie aduhai malasnya lahh.

And movie English, aku prefer ada subtitle english skali. Senang faham. And yes, kamus mesti ad kat sebelah. Hahahhaha

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

Yup! Yup! Betul tu. Aku pun macam tu juga. And memang kena ada kamus dekat sebelah! Hahahahaha :D Tapi, alhamdulillah, sekarang aku dah tak payah ada kamus dekat sebelah. Mungkin pasal dah biasa dah kot :)

  14. things that helped improve my English pula, layan movie banyak-banyak! hahaha. tapi bukan layan je. apa dia cakap, saya ajuk balik. tak semua la. mana ayat saya rasa interesting, i'll try to learn it every day.. so, bila someone talk to me, ayat tu smooth je keluar.

  15. dulu masa zaman sekolah... nak improve my english ni dengar lagu omputeh je.. then, hafal lirik... tengok balik maksud setiap perkataan yang kita tak tahu tu.. hehe

tapi utk kpop/kvariety shows rasa macam kurang sikit.. walaupun ada subtitle.. tapi rasa macam banyak lagi belajar bahasa hangul ni dari belajar english.. tapi sama macam kak farah jugak, kalau ada perkataan yang kita tak tahu ni. dah sedia kamus kat sebelah ataupun bukak google translate. hihi

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bagus juga tu. Saya ni pemalsa sikit nak mendengar dan menghafal. Sebab tu, saya dengar-dengar macam tu je. Kalau rasa macam tak dapat apa yang penyanyi tu cakap, baru saya cari liriknya tu.

Pasal K-pop/K-Variety shows tu, bergantung kepada orang la. I picked up few Hangul words juga masa tengok semua benda tu. Tapi, pasal lagi banyak baca subtitles daripada mendengar (refer balik to the point yang malas mendengar), saya lagi banyak pick up English words.

akak stress betul bila anak-anak sedara tengok movie or kartun dubbing bahasa Melayu. I told them, it's OK kalau tak faham.nanti lama-lama boleh pick up language tu
